Will America Remember? by Dennis Spire, Senior Pastor
Coming up in just a week or so, we will be celebrating the tenth anniversary of 9/11. I remember that day, like most of you do. I was standing in David Kirkwood’s office at the City of San Marcos, and someone rushed in and said, “We’re being attacked!” We ran around the corner just in time to see the second plane push through the World Trade Center building live on TV. We stood there and watched a national tragedy taking place right in front of our eyes. Later, I remember opening up the church building for prayer and there were some who came. One lady came to my office and because of that terrible event, she came to know the Lord as her personal Lord and Savior. At the time I thought maybe this was a wakeup call for America spiritually. The next Sunday our early church service numbers were up and we packed out the house in the second service, even having to bring in extra chairs. But then, two or three weeks later, we were back to business as usual. The crowd dwindled back to where we used to be, and things returned back to the norm. The shock of the tragedy had worn off. Now here we are, 10 years later. I suspect there will be much made of remembering this event. Ceremonies, services, and TV specials are probably planned. But has this event impacted us spiritually in a real way? Has it impacted us as a people enough to drive us back to remember the God of our forefathers, Who, in and of Himself, has been the blessing of our America? “Ground Zero” is a place where some 3,000 people lost their lives. I hope we will never forget, not simply about these 3,000 souls that met their Maker on that date, but that we will continually remember that we need to put the “Maker” back in His proper place in America. America was founded as a Christian nation, let us not forget that. There have been several events after 9/11 that should have caused the Church of America to rise to her feet, but we still remain seated most of the time. When this “dance” called America was beginning back in 1776, we the Church, the people of God, were the ones “brought to the dance” so to speak. But now we sit, quietly, like a little wallflower just waiting for someone to call on us. And so America dances on with others, further away from the ground on which she was founded. What will it take for America to get past this age of “tolerance” and realize who came to this dance with her in the beginning? Why have we been the most blessed nation on the face of the earth in the last 2 centuries? So, how do we, the Church, help America remember her dance partner? Scripture tells us that it is time for repentance. It is time for prayer and fasting! And Church, that doesn’t mean unbelievers. We need to be the ones leading that charge. Do we want to wait and be the wallflower at the dance until God judges America once and for all? We might sit by and let that happen, but we would do well to remember that the righteous will suffer along with everyone else. Look at the Old Testament examples given to us! We need to seek His face through prayer and fasting. So, Church in America, in Texas, in San Marcos, Calvary Family, let’s pray. Pray and fast for revival, for rain, and for God’s grace to be upon the nation of America. Because of His Love, |
